How to remote torrent

Taking the time to write this up so I can point friends to it in future when they ask how I achieve such wizardry. Will update as people point out the probably glaring faults.

  • You need a computer at home. I recommend buying whatever Mac Mini you can find on the Apple Refurb store. Whatever you select (say iMac or old laptop) it will need to be constantly on, so don’t let the device sleep - just the screen.
  • Install Transmission (free). You could try something else, but I use Trans. This tutorial is about Trans, so here we are. This app is going on the home computer.
  • Enable port forwarding. Okay here’s where we get complex. The port “9091” needs to essentially be open to people pinging your IP address from outside your home network. This website should tell you how to do port forward your specific router model. Still confused? Ask your token nerdy friend how this is done. One successfully enabled you should be able to type this url into a browser (http:// YOUR IP JUST THE NUMBERS NO SPACES* :9091/transmission/web/) and see your torrents! This will even work from work. Enter that same URL into your iPhone > Add to home screen. Will make a killer webapp (there is no official iOS app as Apple hates pirates. Yarr.)
  • How to start torrents. Either download the torrent file and upload to the web app or.. copy the URL of the torrent file and paste into the upload field of the web app. Want another cool trick? How to start torrent downloads from anywhere using Dropbox and Transmission.

Voila. Any questions?
